November 3rd marks World Sandwich Day and as the annual ritual dictates, the Quattro crew celebrate with a deep and meaningful debate on the ever-evolving variety of bread and filling partnerships. Between meaty mouthfuls and amidst passionate discourse on deli fillers, we’ve compiled a list of our favourite, most unique and most delectable sandwiches.
In honour of the legacy of John Montagu (1729 – 1792), the 4th Earl of Sandwich, we harnessed our creative catering genius to bring you Team Quattro’s sandwich favourites.
Sourdough special
- 1 slice of sourdough bread
- 2 tsp mango chutney
- 1 egg
- Olive oil for frying
- Sesame seeds, toasted
- 1 red chilli
- 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
Toast a slice of your favourite sourdough. When it’s crisp and warm, top it with a generous dollop of mango chutney. Fry an egg, nice and runny, and place it carefully on top of the chutney. Sprinkle your sandwich with sesame seeds, some chopped fresh chilli and balsamic vinegar, and voila, a hot sandwich that hits the spot.
Tasty toastie
- 2 slices bread
- 2 slices mature cheddar
- 1 tbsp butter
- Half an avocado
- A handful of spinach leaves
- 2 tbsp cottage cheese
You’ll need a toastie-maker for this. Spread some butter on the bread and place it, butter-side down, on the toastie machine. (Did we mention you should plug it in?) Mash the avocado and spread on each slice, top with cottage cheese, spinach and cheese. Close the lid and toast and for 2 minutes. And love, love, love.
Gorgeous gluten-free creation
Fill a gluten-free baguette with prosciutto, goats’ cheese, rocket and sliced tomato.
It’s the best thing since sliced bread!
I spy rye
It’s not too tricky to make that famous Scandi speciality – the open-faced rye sandwich (or a smørrebrød). Sweet beetroot, pickled red onions and cornichons, creamy mayo and hard-boiled egg, with a sprinkle of red wine vinegar. It makes lunch legendary.
Classic combo
- 2 slices soft grainy bread
- 3 tbsp thousand island dressing
- Half a jar of sauerkraut
- 2 slices edam
- 2 slices pastrami
Spread the dressing onto each slice. Add sauerkraut, edam and pastrami. Place the second slice on top. Heat a large skillet and heat the sandwich until it’s toasty and brown, then turn and grill until the cheese melts.
Vegan dream
The ultimate avocado sandwich with tomatoes and rocket.
- 2 slices brown bread
- Half an avocado
- A small tomato
- A handful rocket
- Half a lemon
Toast the bread, cut the avocado and tomato into slices. Assemble everything on one slice of bread and squeeze some lemon juice on top. Close the sandwich.
Get your bread of choice ready, poised with your favourite filling and start spreading the sandwich love.
