Whether you’ve decided it’s time to go green, or you’re simply curious about the benefits of a meat-free diet, join Team Quattro in marking National Vegetarian Week which takes place this year from May 16th to 22nd.
The initiative encourages us to focus on the amazing vegetables in our shops for just one week. But why is eating veggies important?
Undeniably, climate change is having an impact and threatening our wildlife. 41% of UK species have declined since the 1970s. If we want to preserve the existence of endangered species, something has to change. Eating more vegetarian food is one of the best ways we can work to protect the planet. If we want to achieve 30% reduction in meat consumption by 2030, as recommended by the Lancet’s National Food Strategy Report, we can all play a part by having just two meat-free days a week.
What do I get for becoming a member?
If you sign up for National Vegetarian Week you could win one of five £100 Bella Italia vouchers and countless amazing carbon-calculated recipes from renowned chefs Ella Mills, Cauldron, Bosh! and others. There are also exclusive online talks informing us about how choosing veggie food protects wildlife.
Celebrity cause
TV presenter and nature expert Chris Packham is one of many high profile figures to endorse the initiative.
“Climate crisis is adversely affecting the habitats of species like puffins, turtles, red squirrels, and bees putting them at risk,” he says. “It can be easy to feel powerless in the face of climate change, but evidence shows plant-based food is better for the planet and has far less carbon emissions than meat. Choose veggie meals during National Vegetarian Week and you’ll have less impact on our iconic wildlife.”
How can I make a difference?
If you decide to choose veggie for the sake of our climate, and ultimately for the planet’s wildlife, why not simply swap one meal or eat veggie for the whole week?
Educate yourself on the physical and mental benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle and you’ll find it more appealing to eat more greens and consume less meat.
