A day of the ‘shroom? Yes, this humble little veg got a whole fungi festival all to itself on April 16th as we came together in honour of the fleshy, versatile, umbrella-shaped icon of the vegetable drawer in Day of the Mushroom.
Not to be confused with National Mushroom Day, which comes around every October, this is a day that specifically celebrates the edible variety of fungus and is designed to raise awareness about mushrooms and encourage people to eat more of them.
At Quattro Foods we’re major mushroom fans, and our delicious vegan ranges tell the tale of a team dedicated to harnessing the earthy taste of the ‘shroom to create delicious, wholesome and tasty soups and sauces.
In fact, one of our favourite Portsmouth charities benefitted from our over-zealous mushroom days when we donated 144 bags of leftover rich and creamy mushroom sauce to Friday Fridge, a local outreach café. Glowing reports from satisfied punters have reached our ears and we’re delighted!
So, Day of the Mushroom….what’s it all about? The Mushroom Council tells us that the veg has many benefits. Not only do mushrooms boost heart health but they scavenge free radicals in our bodies, induce cell death and can even reduce stress and anxiety.
Mushrooms, which can be eaten plain or stuffed, cooked or raw, can be used in soups, sauces or even salads and sandwiches and have been a staple food since they were cultivated in the early eighteenth century in France. At the time people called them Paris Mushrooms and soon the British began exporting them to America. By the 1940s, mushrooms were being cultivated, sold and consumed on a large scale.
So join us in celebrating these brown and white Agaricus Bisporus, and others in the mushroom family. And as always, we’re not just about the taste at Quattro. We’ve got your health front of mind. So, are mushrooms really so healthy? They are indeed! Low calorie, high fibre, rich in protein and antioxidants, big on selenium which we need to protect the body from damage caused by free radicals. They’ve even been hailed by medical experts for their properties that fight infection and mitigate the risk of developing serious health conditions, from Alzheimer’s to cancer, heart disease and diabetes.
And the popularity of Quattro Foods’ mushroom dishes continues to grow. Apart from our iconic, hearty, flavoursome and filling mushroom sauce, we’re excited to introduce the new kid on the block – our deep, powerful and versatile mushroom ketchup. It’s a great alternative to Worcestershire sauce. Add a splash to your pie and you’ll never look back. It’s vegan, vegetarian, dairy-free and incredibly delicious. It’s anything you want it to be.
Out with the red, in with the brown, let’s all celebrate Mushroom Day ’22 with a dollop of the hottest flavour on the burger, salad, chips…. 🍄
